(Paris, 1930–Rolle, 2022) was a Franco-Swiss filmmaker, screenwriter, and critic, considered one of the central figures of the Nouvelle Vague and one of the most influential authors in the history of cinema. Since Breathless (À bout de souffle, 1960), he radically transformed the ways of narrating, editing, and relating image, sound, word, and politics. Over more than six decades, his work spanned fiction, essay, video, and experimental cinema, maintaining a permanent investigation into war, memory, representation, and the responsibility of those who produce and observe images.
